All Roads Lead to Mud
Lesson Plan: African Mud Textiles
Presenter: Ann H. Fuerst, Ph.D.
Grade Level: K-12
All grades with adult supervision increased in lower grades.
Background Information:
The roads taken to develop this lesson on textile decoration using natural dye (Basilan) and using mud (Bogolanfini/Bogolan) were long and unique.1 One of those reasons has to do with access—access to the greatest living artisans creating mud textiles and access to the particular mud and plant life they use without going through customs. This lesson combines the results of the finest scientific research and an idea to give children an opportunity to understand the historical and scientific contributions and cultural dimensions of the visual arts.
