Paper Clays |
|
|
| Take clay to limits far beyond that
which you previously thought possible! |
- Wet to Dry Assembly
How would you like to apply a moist handle to a dry cup. With
Paper Clay you can!
- Dry to Dry Assembly
You can also attach dry Paper Clay to dry Paper Clay. Suppose
you made a sculpture of a human likeness and you do not like the
position of the arm. Just break it off an attach it at another
location, using Paper Clay slip like glue.
- Wet to Bisque Assembly
This is a little trickier and cannot always be done, but it has
been done frequently enough to make it possible. In this instance
you might be able to attach a wet handle to a bisqued pot, for
example.
- Repairability
Suppose your ceramic form cracks during the bisque firing. Not
to worry. Make some slip out of your Paper Clay, fill in the crack,
and re-fire.
- Enormous Dry Strength
This is a key attribute. The dry unfired strength of Paper Clay
is fantastic. Now you can throw large pieces of greenware into
the back of your car and transport it to another site to be fired,
without having to baby it as much as something made with regular
clay.
- Building Armatures
This is really neat! Remember, you can attach moist Paper Clay
to dry Paper Clay. And remember, the dry strength of paper clay
is truly remarkable. Therefore, you can make an armature of paper
clay and let it dry. Then you may build upon that armature with
moist clay. Wow!
- Resistant to Warping
When normal clay drys it usually does so unevenly. Therefore,
when the edges of a tile dries before the center of the tile,
the edges shrink first and tend to curl up or warp. But paper
clay is filled with microscopic capilaries that pull the air into
the center from the outside. Thus it tends to dry more evenly
and is much more resistant to warping.
- Fire Around Non-Clay Objects
We have not actually tried this ourselves, but we heard that you
could actually fire Paper Clay with other objects, like metal,
embedded in it. Normally clay would crack and break as it shrinks
during drying and firing around an immobile object. We have heard
that this is not the case with Paper Clay. If you choose to experiment
with this, do so on a small scale and treat your first tries as
tests.
- And more...
Due to the dry strength of Paper Clay, it is far easier to glaze
it in the green state without deforming or breaking it that it
would be with regular clay. Force drying is less of a shock to
Paper Clay than regular clay bodies. Most Paper Clay bodies are
capable of being fired in a Raku process. Experiment on a small
scale before going whole hog.
